Samsung, Qualcomm make time for smartwatches

Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm offered their own versions of wearable technology Wednesday in the form of a smartwatch as they test an unproven consumer market. Samsung's $299 Galaxy Gear, which will go on sale Sept. 25, is designed to accompany its smartphones by offering a 1.63-inch display, 1.9-megapixel camera, hands-free calling and messaging. Qualcomm's Android-compatible Toq is due to arrive in the fourth quarter at a reported price of $300. The Toq will feature "days" of battery life, display messages and handle calls as well as show weather data and play music. "The real question is, will this app enhancement make the purchase of yet another smart device worth it?" said Brian Proffitt, an instructor at the University of Notre Dame.
