S&P claims lawsuit is U.S. retaliation

Standard & Poor's claimed that a lawsuit from the U.S. government is retaliation for its 2011 downgrade of America's credit rating, according to court filings. The ratings agency claimed that the lawsuit from the Department of Justice was "impermissibly selective, punitive and meritless," and only occurred "in retaliation for defendants' exercise of their free speech rights with respect to the creditworthiness of the United States of America."
