Tapping an $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Drexel University are bringing together materials science, computing and manufacturing to establish a new discipline they describe as the "informatics of making." "We're not just talking about computing systems, but specifically computing systems in support of material activities," said Vadim Shapiro, professor of mechanical engineering and computer sciences at UW-Madison. "Moving forward requires computational models that know about geometry, materials and physics."
