Australian retail chain Woolworths has sealed a $3 million deal to buy all the fruit it needs for its Select brand of tinned fruit products from Australian growers. The deal is expected to support 118 growers and spare 50,000 fruit trees from destruction. Eleven major food processors have closed up shop in Australia since 2009, and this deal is the latest of several by Woolworths aimed at helping local growers and reviving made-in-Australia food sales.
