New federal center to investigate math and science learning issues

The U.S. government has established a new mathematics and science research center at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study how children learn the two subjects. Educators hope the new program will lead to curriculum and instruction improvements but also have expressed concern about the extent of the government's influence over content and methods.
