Southwest reports lower revenue passenger miles in August

Although year-to-date passenger counts at Southwest Airlines are up 2.2% over 2007, revenue miles at the discount leader fell 5.2% in August and load factors dropped by about the same amount. Southwest's negative numbers appear to reinforce a bleak assessment by the International Air Transport Industry Association, which said Wednesday that high fuel costs could contribute to $5.2 billion in losses for airlines worldwide.
