CIOs are laying groundwork for ICD-10 transition

Hospital CIOs and health information managers are ramping up their efforts to prepare for the switch to ICD-10 by December 2013. Key components of their plans include conducting systems inventories and comprehensive risk assessments, calculating the costs of implementation and rolling out programs to train coders and clinicians. "It can be even more challenging from an IT perspective if you're a best-of-breed versus an integrated shop because you have more systems," said Chuck Podesta, the CIO of Fletcher Allen Health Care.
