Education Department uses randomized trials to evaluate instructional tools

The U.S. Department of Education is borrowing a page from health care in using randomized trials to evaluate textbooks, homework and other tools used in instruction and learning. The studies, such as one currently underway in Florida about an experimental math program, are expected to produce findings that schools can use to determine which curricula, instructional materials and methods are best for their students.
