Malware writers get crafty in effort to avoid detection

In an attempt to circumvent virus protection software, cybercriminals are increasingly opting to deliver their malicious payloads in pieces, with a file included that assembles the malware once it is installed on the target computer, experts say. Researchers at Symantec say they have documented increased use of executable shortcut files disguised as file folders in targeted e-mail attacks that are designed to unpack and assemble pieces of malicious code that wouldn't make it past a firewall if sent in one piece.
