OIG: Medicare auditors find $1.3 billion in improper payments

A report from the HHS Office of Inspector General said Medicare's recovery auditors are good at finding improper payments to health care providers, identifying $1.3 billion in such payments from fiscal years 2010 to 2011. The OIG called on the CMS to do more to prevent improper payments and potential fraud, however, and CMS identified 46 areas of vulnerability that could lead to improper payments.
