Proposed CMS payment programs pose nuclear medicine hurdles

New payment policies proposed by CMS for next year include substantially higher hospital reimbursement rates for PET, SPECT and oncologic PET, but some of the proposals present challenges to the nuclear medicine industry, according to this article. These include the proposed bundling of stress agents, which could take the focus away from clinical decisions, and the removal of radiopharmaceutical-to-procedure edits, which could eventually lead to payment erosion since hospitals would not opt for full disclosure of nuclear medicine costs.
