Attendance Works and other organizations are marking September as Attendance Awareness Month. Experts say that just a few missed school days can build into chronic absenteeism, leading students to fall behind, fail to catch up and eventually quit school. A federal proposal would require schools to send absentee data to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. "Chronic absenteeism can be a sign of serious school climate issues that are driving children out of school," said Cameron French, deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Education.
