Teacher shares what he learned from his rookie mistakes

The first year in the classroom is challenging for educators, elementary-school teacher Justin Minkel writes in this commentary. Minkel notes the mistakes he made as a first-year teacher -- including reprimanding a student before the school day had even started and being too focused on his own day, rather than that of his students. Minkel writes that, in time, he improved as a teacher to become less self-conscious and to focus more on active learning rather than lectures.
