Tunnel-boring machines at work on $1.5B San Francisco subway

Two 350-foot-long, 750-ton tunnel-boring machines are digging the route for the $1.5 billion Central Subway Project in San Francisco. The machines can "adjust their blades and cut through any sand, dirt or rock," said Sarah Wilson, resident engineer at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. The project will add 1.7 miles to the Muni Metro T Third Line.
