U.S. consumers vary spending

Apparel and automotive retailers are having different sales experiences as summer 2013 gives way to fall. U.S. consumer spending on autos is now at a level not seen since the financial crisis began, while apparel retailers such as Macy’s and Kohl’s have been forced to downgrade expectations for the rest of the year due to lagging sales. Home-improvement product retailers are seeing increased sales, as the housing market continues to improve.
