Oberstar, DOT secretary split on funding for bridge inspections

Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., and Transportation Secretary Mary Peters both say the nation's inspection standards need to be improved, but the two are in disagreement over how. Oberstar has proposed a new fund, supported by a gas-tax increase or other new revenue, to repair the nation's interstate bridges, but Peters said she is opposed to raising the gas tax and that states should be exploring alternatives to petroleum-based taxes.
