Parents crack open nest egg to move kids from the roost

A rising number of parents are dipping into their retirement savings to help pay college costs for their kids, a Sallie Mae and Gallup survey showed. IRAs can be used to pay for some higher-education expenses without the usual penalty, and some college expenses may qualify for a 401(k) hardship withdrawal.
