Technology has cut factory jobs, increased productivity

Technology such as robots and software have allowed American factories to shed workers while boosting productivity, writes Alan Brown. With Chinese wages on the rise, technology will help to shrink the cost gap between Chinese and American factories. U.S. factories will increasingly employ more educated workers rather than the laborers they did in the past, as the trend toward automation continues, said Tom Runiewicz of IHS Global Insight.
