Some states make large cuts to education despite stimulus

Billions in federal stimulus money for education has helped to prevent layoffs and other cutbacks in some school districts, but states facing the largest budget deficits have had to make substantial cuts to education despite the federal assistance. The layoffs and, in many cases, rehiring of teachers has disrupted instruction at schools across the country, and many districts were forced to let go of top educators.
