Earthquake shakes New Zealand, causes $1.4B in damage

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the New Zealand city of Christchurch, destroying some 500 buildings and causing $1.4 billion in damage. The earthquake opened an 11-foot fault in the earth's surface as it struck the country's second-largest city. Few serious injuries were reported.
