Efforts to ban small cages for hens worry egg producers

The recent nationwide egg recall is further fueling calls for the egg industry to stop the use of small cages to house egg-laying hens, which animal-welfare groups say is inhumane. However, major egg producers say switching to cage-free housing likely would not result in improved safety, and would increase the cost of eggs.
