FDA: Biotech salmon is safe for environment, humans

An FDA staff report released Friday said that AquaBounty's genetically altered salmon, which grows more quickly than regular salmon, is as safe as conventional salmon for humans and the environment. In an analysis posted on its website, the agency said that the product carries higher levels of insulinlike growth factor 1 but it poses no significant risk when consumed by humans. The FDA will hold public meetings later this month and then issue a final decision on approval.
