Four-lane Fairfax County Parkway opens Sept. 13 in Virginia

Seven state governors and nearly 40 years later, a 35-mile, four-lane parkway linking Route 7 to Route 1 in Virginia's Fairfax County is nearly complete. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the parkway's opening on Sept. 13, although some side work -- such as linking the parkway to I-95 -- remains undone. The final sections of the parkway will be completed in time for the massive consolidation of military employees at Ft. Belvoir under the Pentagon's Base Closure and Realignment process.
