Illinois DOT gauges traffic as I-57 work ensues

The Illinois Transportation Department is using speed sensors to measure traffic flow as it launches road work on I-57. Computers will calculate speeds and how much time it takes to move through the construction zone. Given that the road handles some 40,000 drivers daily on average, IDOT officials said the extra technology investment was warranted.
