Federal policy encouraging oil and natural gas production could generate up to 1 million jobs over the next seven years and help the country curb its reliance on energy imports, the American Petroleum Institute said in a report. API urged the government to open up new sites for offshore exploration and clear TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline. "We believe that could be a very important part of the president's plan in his focus on job creation and working with the Republican and Democratic leadership in Congress," said Jack Gerard, API's president and CEO. API also requested that New York state officials end a moratorium on gas drilling in the state.
