MCAS results thrown into confusion

The Massachusetts Department of Education said about 38,000 students omitted their race when taking the 2003 MCAS, a discrepancy that potentially could undermine the apparent closing of the racial achievement gap hailed last week when test results were announced. Some school officials suggested that students of mixed race might have ignored the test's race question to protest being categorized.
