Houston works to curb dropout rate

Houston officials are knocking on the doors of absentee students and creating small learning communities within their high schools to reduce the district's 25% dropout rate. HISD suffered adverse publicity for two years after an investigation revealed district employees had miscounted dropouts and falsified records during the 2000 to 2001 school year.
