Caterpillar sets up smoking areas as compromise on smoking ban

When Caterpillar issued a smoking ban on its East Peoria, Ill., campus in June, the United Auto Workers Local 974 filed a complaint against the manufacturer. The union then appealed a ruling that would have sent it to arbitration. In the meantime, Caterpillar set up smoking areas in the parking lot of the plant to prevent employees from smoking by the road.
