Durham grew green businesses before green was cool

Durham, N.C., had a blooming market of green businesses even before the green movement took off. The Scrap Exchange, which sells fabric remnants, for instance, has been around for as long as 18 years, and other businesses include Common Ground, a green kitchen design center, and Peters Design Works, selling salvaged items ranging from windows and doors to old table legs.
