North Carolina's 1,300-bed Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has gone high-tech in a big way. It installed a 900-access-point wireless LAN that aides in electronic charting and provides a wireless, direct communication system between patients and nurses. Its wide-area LAN encompasses 2 million square feet and includes in-patient and outpatient areas, lecture halls and other critical areas. Tablet PCs are being piloted.
