The Toms River, N.J., school district is partnering with Verizon Wireless and GoKnow! on a program that integrates smartphones into classroom lessons for about 1,000 fifth- and sixth-graders. Students will use the phones for research, downloading books, writing reports and other activities. "We're finding that students are more engaged and even requesting to delve deeper into topics," one teacher said. Verizon paid the $3 million needed for the program.
