Group reports increased number of physician assistants in the U.S.

The U.S. had about 83,000 physician assistants in 2010, a twofold increase from a decade ago, the American Academy of Physician Assistants stated. Researchers said New York had the most number of PAs with 6,989, while California placed second with 6,723 assistants. Nearly one-third of PAs work in primary care, due in part to the shortage of primary care doctors, researchers said.
