IHS: Apple's rift with Samsung could affect its memory capabilities

Apple's reducing its dependence on Samsung Electronics for semiconductors going into its electronics could have an adverse effect on the advanced memory technology it needs, according to IHS. "While the argument can be made that Apple sees some benefits by not sharing critical prototype design information with Samsung, the fact remains that Apple limits its options by not doing business with Samsung, which places Apple at a disadvantage," said IHS analyst Mike Howard, noting that there remain just three major suppliers of DRAMs and four big suppliers of NAND flash memory devices.
