Texas comptroller: Later school start could save millions

Yesterday, Texas State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn announced she would appoint a task force to study the merits of having schools open after Labor Day. Strayhorn noted the common practice of starting the school term in mid- to early-August shortens the summer tourism season and cuts into teachers' ability to take continuing education courses.
