Japanese electronics retailer defies shopaphobic trend

Japan has transformed from a society of conspicuous consumption to one in which younger consumers dislike all but online and thrift-store shopping. Yamada Denki, the largest consumer-electronics retailer in Japan, has managed to defy the trend. The company has doubled its sales over the past five years by rewriting the country's rules of retailing.
