Should you start offering a 401(k) plan?

Small-business owners considering creating a 401(k) plan for their employees should first consider what their goals are for the plan, said lawyer Jewell Lim Esposito. Employers should also consider the fees that come with setting up the plans -- usually about $1,500 to $3,000 -- and understand the requirements that come with different kinds of 401(k)s, experts say. For example, one type requires employers to make sure high-earning employees don't disproportionately profit from the benefit.
