Illinois utility Commonwealth Edison began rolling out the first of a planned 4 million smart meters to its subscribers after state lawmakers overturned the governor's veto of legislation that would allow power companies to raise their fees to pay for the upgrades. The deployments, which commenced in Chicago's western suburbs, will be followed up next year by Ameren Illinois, which anticipates installing 780,000 of the devices by the end of 2019.
After tough legislative battle, Illinois finally gets smart meters
