"Artificial nose" allows for faster ID of blood infections

University of Illinois researchers have developed an "artificial nose" designed to improve blood infection diagnosis and identify specific microbes through their scent. The tool features a chemical sensing array and 36 pigment dots that change color depending on a microbe's signature odor. The new approach yields results within 24 hours, compared with up to 72 hours using current methods, researchers reported at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.
