IDFA: Family-owned ice cream businesses still rule the industry

The U.S. produced about 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream and frozen treats in 2011, and small-town, independent ice cream shops are finding new life as ice cream production continues to rise. Production is up 2.4% to 77 million gallons, according to July 2013 USDA data, and family-owned shops that have been open for more than 50 years still make up the majority of businesses that produce ice cream, IDFA reported.
