Physicians support new community-based residency programs

HHS recently began funding medical residency programs at community-based sites, and officials with these centers say they are a big draw for residencies and excel at teaching culturally competent patient care. The initiative can change the relationship between the centers and local hospitals and future funding may be in question, but AAFP Past-President Ted Epperly, M.D., CEO of the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in Boise, said the residency program is exactly what they need and he would "do it again in a heartbeat."
