Report: SMEs vital to Indian pharmaceutical sector

Small- and medium-sized enterprises contribute as much as 35% to 40% of India’s pharmaceutical production value, according to the India Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Report 2013. SMEs, which focus largely on manufacturing and niche marketing, account for about 87% of the nation’s pharmaceutical production by volume and support 48% of the country’s drug exports, the report said. India’s pharmaceutical exports grew from $6.2 billion in 2006-2007 to $8.7 billion in 2012-2013.
