Some top union officials say the AFL-CIO, the nation's biggest labor federation, should walk back its efforts to forge links to progressive groups. Environmental and civil rights issues do sometimes dovetail with labor concerns, but reflexively aligning with liberal groups doesn't serve union members' best interests, officials argue. "This is the American Federation of Labor. We are supposed to be representing workers," said Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters. "We are not going to be the American Federation of Progressive and Liberal Organizations."
