VA malpractice payouts to veterans hit $91.7 million

Malpractice payouts by the Department of Veterans Affairs have reached a 12-year high of $91.7 million, according to records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. "The rapid rise in malpractice judgments against VA mirrors the emerging pattern of preventable veteran deaths and other patient safety issues at VA hospitals," said Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, which is holding a hearing on the matter today in Pittsburgh.
