Former janitor shines as principal

Jack Yates, principal of Hawkins Elementary School, rose from school janitor to his current position through diligence, night courses and understanding supervisors who rearranged his custodial hours to accommodate his student teaching. Officials from the Brighton, Mich., school district and teachers union praise Yates for his ability to earn his colleagues' trust and his sensitivity to their needs.
