Column: Building industry moves to mitigate terrorism, disaster risk

Building owners, designers and building code organizations have taken steps since Sept. 11, 2001, to improve design, fire safety and egress systems within the building industry, writes architect Barbara A. Nadel. She notes, however, that global terrorism and natural disasters remain serious threats. "The building industry, and its major professional organizations, must continue to look ahead and press forward with visionary and pragmatic initiatives that will enhance the built environment and protect public safety and national security," she writes.
