Caterpillar switches non-union retirees to HSAs

Caterpillar will switch 9,000 non-union retirees to health savings accounts on Jan. 1. The equipment manufacturer will disburse $3,000 into the accounts of retirees age 65 or older, instead of paying for premiums for Medicare Part B. However, some retirees are concerned about the ability of the new plan's lump sum to cover health care costs.
