White roofs reflect energy off of a structure, reducing the so-called heat island effect, writes Kristin Arrigo. She notes that switching to a white roof could cut cooling costs by up to 20%. Arrigo notes that green roofs offer environmental benefits, including improved insulation and a reduction in stormwater runoff.
