IOM recommends enhancements to standards for patient ethnicity data

The Institute of Medicine suggests that the HHS formulate standards specifically for patient ethnicity and level of language proficiency data in electronic health records in order to improve the delivery of care based on these aspects. In its latest report, the IOM said more narrowly defined information on ethnicity and language "can assist in improving overall quality and promoting equity."
