Teach Alabama, a 5-year-old program to guide and train high-school students to become teachers, has seen its first graduate. Courtney Garner, now teaching first grade, is the first participant to become an educator. "She's a success story," said Teach Alabama founder Frances Schofield. "She was a fantastic student, and now she's a fantastic teacher." Schofield started the program with a $50,000 state grant; today, it is offered in 37 Alabama schools.
