S.D. study seeks to find best ethanol blend for state vehicles

Officials in South Dakota are conducting a yearlong study to determine the optimum percentage of ethanol to use for the state's vehicle fleet after initial tests showed that E85 does not result in savings or better mileage. The tests showed that E85's 23-cent advantage over E10 was canceled out by a 23% decline in gas mileage, said Mike Mueller, spokesman for the South Dakota Bureau of Administration. State-owned filling stations in Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Pierre are using E30 as part of the study, Mueller added.
